We are looking for a new Treasurer to replace our long-serving current one, Fraser Rae, who is retiring. This could be the role for you if you want to get involved in the running of the Society, and want to help the other members of the management team to deliver successful live classical orchestral events in South Lakeland.

The Society’s finances are robust, well governed and actively discussed by the management team. Our annual income and expenditure used to be around £150k before the pandemic, and we expect to return to that level as normality gradually returns. We do not have a payroll, neither do we have to account for VAT. We have a bookkeeper using QuickBooks software who takes care of day to day financial administration, and Mitchisons of Kendal provide expert accounting advice and independent auditing. Our modernisation programme is well advanced, and we are in the process of changing our banking arrangements to allow new (for us) innovations such as online payments at our pop-up box office on concert nights.
Person Skills and Role
We are flexible in our requirements, however this is a responsible position as part of the management team. Ideally you would have management and financial experience, although the role does not require you to be an accountant or bookkeeper. You would need to be a good communicator, comfortable with email and basic spreadsheets. Knowledge of QuickBooks software is not essential as our bookkeeper does all the day to day work, however we envisage making more of its budget reporting capabilities in the future. There is lots of scope for redefining our financial processes, and finding ways to better support budget holders.
Key duties include:-
- Overseeing the day to day bookkeeping service
- Approving payments
- Signatory on current and deposit accounts
- Forward planning and budgeting
- Financial reporting
- Supporting our accountant to prepare annual accounts for the Charity Commission
- Leading modernisation of financial systems and processes
- Supporting grant applications, e.g. to Arts Council England
- Working with other trustees to ensure appropriate financial outcomes
If you are interested, or know someone else who might be, please contact us by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org , and we will discuss the opportunities with you.
