The season continues its themed concerts with music taking us to sunny Spain. We visit Rossini’s ‘Seville’ for a tonsorial tidy, the area of Aranjuez, just south of Madrid, for the blind composer Rodrigo’s loved Guitar Concerto, and then to Madrid itself for Boccherini’s evocation of the eighteenth century streets of that city at night. Remaining in Madrid, Turina’s Toreador’s Prayer touches on a serious element of Spanish life. Mozart, although welltravelled throughout Europe, did not visit Spain, but his exuberant Haffner symphony complements the programme’s theme perfectly.
