A concert of tuneful, lively music with an Italian theme opens our season. We have two solo concertos, one for cor anglais, a rare performer on the solo stage. A rich serenade by Wolf, famous for his many songs, and Schubert’s ‘anything Rossini can do I can do just as well’ overture are complemented perfectly by Mendelssohn’s symphony, which captures the composer’s exhilaration. ‘This is Italy … and I am loving it … The jolliest piece I have ever done.’
