The centrepiece of this concert is Beethoven’s mighty Fifth Piano Concerto, the Emperor, never actually played in performance by the composer as his acute deafness made this impossible. The rest of the programme is a veritable potpourri of popular classics, from Vaughan Williams’s Greensleeves, Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Vivaldi’s vivacious Concerto for Two Trumpets and some seasonal pantomime (Cinderella) music from the Lancastrian composer, Ernest Tomlinson. A lively Mozart overture opens the evening and Manuel de Falla’s stamping Ritual Fire Dance brings our December programme to a warm close.
