Nielsen: Overture Helios
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op.64
Dvorak: Symphony No.8 in G, Op.88
The Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s rich and beautifully-coloured description of the daily journey of the sun over the Aegean Sea opens this concert. Mendelssohn’s ever-popular, high-spirited and lyrical Violin Concerto is in contrast. We are back to nature and in the open air with Dvorak’s 8th Symphony, his evocation of his love for the countryside of his native land, written in less than four weeks – an amazing feat, saturated with melody and nature.
