Music to help us through the long lead up to Christmas: Tchaikovsky’s colourful and exciting music from his Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker, with its national dances, waltzing flowers, a march around the Christmas tree and, of course, Miss Sparkle herself, the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Appealing to ornithologists as well as music lovers,  the concert features a catalogue of birds from Respighi – the Dove, the Hen, the Nightingale (all taking a break from the ’12 Days of Christmas’), a persistent Cuckoo; plus a guest from Rossini-land, a mischievous Magpie. Christmas food? A selection of cheeses – a tenuous link to the horn player Leutgeb, a cheesemaker by profession, for whom Mozart wrote his horn concertos.
