This is the 34th season of concerts promoted by the Lakeland Sinfonia
Concert Society, a unique music organisation. We can make that claim because we
bring visiting orchestras and players but we also promote “our own” orchestra..
We are also proud that conductors, soloists and members of orchestras tell how
much they enjoy coming to Kendal and playing to capacity and enthusiastic
audiences.
Our next season starts in early October and end in April 2009. Details of the
concerts are given on subsequent pages. Once again we are pleased that there
will be a number of free pre-concerts talks that are useful and entertaining.
This season’s subscription concerts feature (in chronological order) Manchester
Camerata, Lakeland Sinfonia and our good friends from Northern Sinfonia. In the
new year we welcome again the BBC Philharmonic and the Hallé. The Christmas
Charity Concert provides a lighter evening and supports two deserving local
charities.
We are constantly surprised.....
that there are still some people who are not aware of our excellent concerts and
feel they must travel many miles to hear music of such quality. Please do tell
your friends about us, and persuade them that, contrary to local folk lore, it
is possible to obtain tickets for our concerts. If they would like a copy of
our brochure, please would you or they ring

Old
and New Friends
It’s a good way of describing
the concerts and artists we have for you this season – we mean "old" in terms of
longstanding!
We
feature five orchestras and twenty one composers – the latter from the 17th
century to the present day. Two anniversaries are celebrated – 150 years since
the death of Haydn and 50 years since Martinu’s.
Biographical notes will be given in our concert programmes. Let’s mention now
the conductors, featured on the cover who will be coming to Kendal. Wyn
Davies (1) is Musical Director of New Zealand Opera and has been busy
conducting Janáček's Jenufa there. Thomas Zehetmair (2) with the Northern Sinfonia
will celebrate the orchestra's 50th anniversary at the Sage Gateshead in
September.
Ian Brown
(3) was with us last season conducting the Lakeland Sinfonia and we are
delighted to welcome him back.
We are also pleased
that Bernard Labadie (4) will be returning with the Northern Sinfonia.
The Hallé will come in February, with Rory MacDonald (5) their former Assistant Conductor; he
will bring a sparkling programme.
Günther
Herbig (7) has been the Principal Guest Conductor of
the BBC Philharmonic since 1979. He was last in Kendal in 1995.
That leaves the
newcomer who we hope will enjoy his visit to us. Gordan Nikolitch (6) is
Principal Guest Director of the Manchester Camerata. He has been the Leader of the
London Symphony Orchestra since 1997. After their warm reception two
seasons ago we look forward to them opening our series. |
