Sibelius
wrote a great deal of stage and incidental music, some popular, some
forgotten but the opening movement of
Pelléas
and
Mélisande,
has provided the signature tune of BBC TV's longest running series, 'The
Sky at Night' over 50 years old and still going strong – now that's
popularity!
Mozart's final symphony, the musically spectacular Jupiter, and
Schumann's inspired concerto, described by Clara his wife as 'romantic,
fresh and wholly ravishing', complete the evening. We welcome back to
Kendal Guy Johnston. In 2009 he has been touring with the St. Petersburg
Symphony Orchestra.
