Two close
friends – Brahms and Schumann – take centre stage with Brahms’ mighty
first Piano Concerto and Schumann’s joyful third symphony, celebrating
his time in Dusseldorf and visits to Cologne Cathedral. The music of
the English composer, Colin Matthews, opens the programme with what the
composer describes as ‘a single span of music, mainly slow’. We
welcome Jonathan Biss – Classic FM magazine wrote “he has the rare
ability to make you sit up and take notice as if you were hearing a
well-known piece for the very first time”
