A
Mendelssohn overture, written in 3 days, even though he thought little
of Ruy Blas as a play, Dvořįk's concerto written in America in 3 months,
with two tributes to his sister in law Josephine - the second inserted
into the original ending when he heard of her death - provide the
'curtain raisers' to Beethoven's Pastoral.
Raphael
Wallfisch has been described as "A great English cellist possessing a
superb technique. A world star".
Never had
a symphony included bird song, a rippling stream, dancing peasants, a
very rustic country band and a storm. Unusually for Beethoven, he writes
a symphony that fades away, with its tranquility providing a calm ending
to our season.
