What
can only be described as a ‘capital’ concert with three works having
London connections. Elgar’s tribute to ‘his friends in British
orchestras’ explores London’s sights and sounds. Then Vaughan Williams’,
more extended London portrait, includes the Westminster Chimes, the
jingling of the harnesses of the hansom cabs and the sounds of street
musicians before the music is taken downstream by the capital’s river.
Haydn’s capital contribution is the final symphony of the twelve he
presented during two lengthy visits to London and also the last symphony
he ever wrote – after 104, who could blame him!
Sir Mark Elder was last with us in 2002. We are delighted that he is
here again with this great orchestra for a truly gala concert.
