Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 |
An exciting evening featuring popular principals of the
Orchestra. Lots of rhythm & colour is promised as we spend most of the concert
in South America. The cellos are joined by soprano Katherine Manley in the
famous Bachianas Brasileiras number 5, having earlier had the stage to
themselves in the first Bachianas Brasileiras. Bach's 2nd Suite features the
solo flute of Juliette Bausor, performing music by the composer who inspired
Villa-Lobos to write 9 of these Bachianas Brasileiras. Piazolla's Four Seasons
of Buenos Aires were hugely popular last season and are complimented in
tonight's concert by a tribute to Piazzolla by the Argentinean composer Osvaldo
Golijov (b. 1960) whose intriguingly titled Last Round (1996) completes our
evening south of the equator.
